Dr. Matt Akin officially began serving as the Huntsville City Schools Superintendent on March 13, 2017. Dr. Akin has previously served as the Superintendent of Piedmont Alabama Schools since 2003, and had also worked in the district as a principal and the coordinator of administrative services. He started his career in education with the Anniston City Alabama School District in 1991 as a computer science and math teacher and later became the district’s technology coordinator and director of student services. Akin has a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from Samford University, a Master of Arts degree in Administration Certification, and a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics. Dr. Akin is also a Vice Chairman of Alabama’s “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA) Committee established by Governor Robert Bentley.
