HCS Changemaker: Mrs. Donna Davis

Congratulations to Mrs. Donna Davis, a first-grade teacher at James I. Dawson Elementary School, who has been selected as this week’s HCS Changemaker!

Mrs. Davis became a teacher so she could have a positive influence on children which she recognizes as the basis for our future as a society.  Teaching is something that she not only loves to do but is how she contributes to that future.  Her grandmother taught for forty years before retiring, and Mrs. Davis says that “she is still an inspiration now.”  One of Mrs. Davis’ eleventh-grade teachers also displayed a passion for ensuring the best outcomes for students as well as a caring attitude that Mrs. Davis has carried into her own classroom.

“She loves and cares for all of her students,” says Dawson Principal Taunya Smith, “not just the ones in her class, but every student here.”  Principal Smith adds, “Donna Davis is a very good example of what every teacher should be striving to be.”  In her classroom, students can be found engaging in a variety of activities such as reading a book, pronouncing words as a group, or even practicing behaviors for different real-world settings.  First-grade student Caliyah Thompson says, “She teaches us a lot.”  In all of her lessons, Mrs. Davis displays a level of caring and compassion that the students feel every day.  “She’s nice, smart, and good at teaching,” says first-grade student Israel Pride.

Outside the classroom, Mrs. Davis likes to spend a lot of time reading for both recreational and informational purposes.  She says her favorite book is the bible, which serves as a guide and helps to give her strength each day.  She and her family enjoy going bowling and spending time outside.  Her son plays for the Rocket City Elite, and she says that makes her a “very proud basketball mom.”

“I love the students,” Mrs. Davis says, “just being here for them – it’s what I love the most.”  She teaches her students to be respectful, responsible, and to always do their best.  It is perhaps her ability to exemplify those characteristics that makes her such a wonderful role model for those she teaches, and a changemaker for the entire school.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “HCS Changemaker." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
