HCS Changemaker: Ms. Amie Hope

Congratulations to Ms. Amie Hope, a third-grade teacher at Highlands Elementary School, who has been selected as this week’s HCS Changemaker!

Ms. Hope wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do when she first began college.  The decision to become an educator didn’t happen until the second year when her parents suggested that she give it a try.  She quickly found herself drawn to the material in her classes, especially to her work with unit planning and literature.  Ms. Hope went on to develop a strong passion for her work as a teacher, which grew even more after having her own children.  She says that on the first day of school when she meets the students, they “just become a part of my life.”

“Ms. Hope is a fantastic teacher,” says Highlands Principal Amber Hall, “I think it comes from her having such a big heart and love for her students.”  Ms. Hope cultivates that love every day in her classroom by building great relationships with each student and with the community.  Londyn Currington, one of the students at Highlands, relays a message Ms. Hope gives to her students: “If you want to make someone happy, fill up their bucket with kindness.”  Ms. Hope spends a significant amount of class time focusing on reading skills, so students can often be seen reading quietly or working with her individually on fundamental skills.  Students also keep notebooks to self-reflect on their own abilities, which they update throughout the year.  She says, “I really want them to be as successful as they can be.”  According to Highlands student Aniya Robinson, “she’s a great teacher.”

When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Hope says that she spends the majority of her free time with her three children.  Together, they enjoy going on church trips and mini-vacation weekends.  Ms. Hope also likes to read and has a particular fondness for Janet Evonovich’s One for the Money series.  She likes to return to Tuscaloosa as often as she can and enjoys spending time with old friends at favorite locales such as Taco Casa.  She’s a big Alabama football fan and says that sometimes people are surprised when they see how passionate she can get while watching the games, especially considering that she is usually more mild-mannered.

Ms. Hope’s ultimate goal for her students is that they feel safe, loved, nurtured, and know that there is always someone they can come back to if they need anything.  She wants them to experience great success and helps them learn about their own strengths, while also talking about those things that might require more practice.  She focuses her efforts on meeting all the needs of the whole child, and for that reason she is a true changemaker in their lives.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “HCS Changemaker." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
