NCTHS Student Earns Prestigious Scholarship

Congratulations to Ella Duus, a senior at New Century Technology High School, who has earned the prestigious Rise Scholarship from Schmidt Futures, the philanthropic arm of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Unlike many other scholarship opportunities, the Rise Scholarship is a lifelong program that offers not only tuition for a four-year college program, but also additional services during and after graduation.

According to the Schmidt Futures website:

"Rise starts at ages 15–17 and offers access to a lifetime of benefits including scholarships, mentorship, access to career development opportunities, funding, and more as Global Winners work toward solving humanity’s most pressing problems. An initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust, Rise is the anchor program of a $1 billion commitment from Eric and Wendy Schmidt to find and support global talent."

Ella is one of only 100 winners, with over 50k applicants competing for the scholarship.  As a result, she was able to attend a summit with the other winners in South Africa and start forging academic and professional connections across the globe.

“My favorite part so far,” she says, “has been connecting with the other winners.  I’ve met people from Ireland, Honk Kong, Zandia, [and] South Africa, and listening to their experiences and making friends with them has been life changing.”

The Rise program connects talent from over 170 countries, with global winners of the scholarship hailing from over 42 countries across 6 continents.
