Retiring Jemison Coach Jack Doss Receives “Coach of the Year” Award from USA Today

Coach Doss receiving reward from USA TodayErin Conroy, of USA Today Sports, presented the ALL-USA 2016-17 Boys Basketball Coach of the Year award to retiring Jemison basketball coach Jack Doss on Tuesday.  Doss led the Jemison High School boys’ basketball team to victory at the state championship this year, securing the new school’s first trophy.  The win also gave Doss his tenth state title win, setting an Alabama state record.  He has coached previous state championships at Johnson, Butler, and Hayes High School in Birmingham, mentored over 40 players who have gone on to play Division I college basketball, and ends his HCS career with an all-time win/loss record of 812-329.

“It’s the apex of all feelings,” according to Coach Doss.  He adds that he feels honored to be selected by USA Today out of all the other coaches across the country.  Doss began his coaching career as a player-coach in the Air Force, where he also played softball, football, and basketball.  He has been coaching in Huntsville City Schools for thirty-three years, and has over forty years of total experience.  He says his original goal was to win five state championships, and that “never in my wildest imagination did I think I’d win ten.”  He attributes his success, in part, to administrators, assistant coaches, and “great players.”

Coach Doss with Erin Conroy of USA TodayDoss instills a sense of discipline, motivation, and hard work in students, and says his reward comes from seeing players go on to be successful in life. He hopes that his example will serve as a message for them to work hard and do things in the right way, and “in all endeavors, do it with passion.”  A lot of sacrifice and hard work have gone into the coach’s career, but his players have seen him give 100% on and off the court – and one can be certain that it has taught some valuable lessons.

Coach Doss was also inducted in the 2015 Class of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, and is a previous inductee in the Madison County Sports Hall of Fame.
