Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Kelli McLemore

Congratulations to Ms. Kelli McLemore, a second-grade teacher at Monte Sano Elementary, who has been selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!

Ms. McLemore says she had a lot of great teacher role models as a child, and she realized early on that she wanted to be just like some of those people she viewed as personal heroes.  As she got older, she realized that she also had a natural passion for helping others.  As early as age fourteen, she worked at a daycare, bible school, and eventually a public library so she could begin to fulfill that passion.  It wasn’t until she began to pursue elementary education, however, that she realized where her heart truly belonged.

“She comes in every day ready to work,” says Monte Sano Elementary Principal Sharon Driggers, “she comes in with a giving heart.”  She pushes her students forward by working with them on an individual level, taking the time to get to know them.  This helps her to better assess where they are and what they need.  Ms. McLemore says that “at the end of the day, you have to love your kids no matter what.”  Students in her classroom can often be seen working with her either individually or in small groups at a pull-out table.  Recognizing that sometimes a student’s best teacher is another student, she also encourages them to work together as a team as often as possible.

When Ms. McLemore isn’t teaching, she and her husband enjoy visiting the beach, hanging out with family, fishing, shopping, and going out to eat.  Sometimes they enjoy just relaxing in their own back yard with the dog.  Ms. McLemore is fortunate to live close to her own parents and sister, so they enjoy being able to spend time with them as well.

More than anything, Ms. McLemore wants her students to feel successful.  She wants them to learn something new every day, to be able to go home and tell their parents about what they learned.  With all the hard work, dedication, and heart she puts into meeting her students’ needs, it’s no wonder she succeeds admirably.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
