Teacher Spotlight: Rebecca Campbell

Congratulations to Ms. Rebecca Campbell, the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) teacher at Monte Sano Elementary, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!

Ms. Campbell is the daughter of a career educator, which may have played a part in her desire to be a teacher from a very young age.  She used to play school as a little girl, and knew right away what she wanted to be when she grew up. She feels like she has the world’s best job, adding that she loves coming to work and seeing the kids each day.  Ms. Campbell and her husband have two children, one of which currently attends Monte Sano where she teaches.  Both keep her quite busy, but they do enjoy taking trips to the beach and attending sporting events. Ms. Campbell and her husband are big fans of The University of Alabama, having both attended school there, so they try to go to as many of the school’s athletic events as they can.

In the classroom, Ms. Campbell is completely focused on making the students curious.  She says, “I tell them every day that I hope they’ve learned something new,” adding that curiosity leads to learning.  Her lessons are centered around higher-order thinking skills, and she incorporates math, writing, and lots of STEM activities. According to Principal Sharon Driggers, “she brings the outside world in to her students.”  The students even make use of YouTube by analyzing a “video of the week.” Students ask questions about the video, then collect data and analyze it to try and answer their questions. One of her students, Derek Smith, says that he and other students are “more challenged when she teaches us.”  Claire Quadrini, another student, also adds that the class is a place where students can really express themselves.

In the words of Principal Driggers, “She’s fabulous, and we’re lucky to have her.”

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight.”  Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
