Paul Bonner

In the spring of 1967 I was a disinterested second grader in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As teachers searched for ways to get me interested in school they discovered that I enjoyed drawing. Although my teacher, Mrs. Jones, tried to get me to attend to school tasks I usually spent the whole day completing dioramas of various sorts around the margins of papers, typically sports, outdoors, or battle scenes. My first blue ribbon in art came that spring in the school arts fair which helped me believe that I could render well. Neither my teachers nor parents felt that I was making progress, so I was held back. My performance and interest in school gradually improved through elementary school where in 6th grade I took up the trumpet. As I matriculated into 7th grade I was a confident student due in great measure to my success in visual art and music. Drawing and painting were like breathing for me where I passionately sought to render and compose all the way through college. After high school I attended Sewanee where trumpet gave way to guitar which I play today. My wife of 27+ years and I have three children, one a teacher and two in college. I strive to remain intellectually curious through reading, music, outdoor activities and civic discourse. More importantly I find service to students to be my primary calling and ongoing joy. I look forward to this new journey with AAA and serving the entire school community.
