Blossomwood Greenpower Team Wins 1st Place!
The Blossomwood Greenpower team participated in the Goblin Games on October 20th. Not only did they win 1st place in the drag race but they also won first place overall!
The team consists of fifth graders who worked together to build a single seat, electric powered car that they race twice a year against other teams. The cars get a push start and then they're driven in three different types of races: drag race, slalom race, and circuit race. The students met weekly for the last six weeks to practice pushing and driving the car. The team worked on different combinations of students that would give them the best times for the competition. At the race on October 20th, they competed against thirty other teams from schools in Huntsville, Madison, and Fort Payne. Teams earned points for their place finish in each of the three races and for their tri-fold presentation.
The teams were challenged to design the outside of the car to go along with a favorite book. The Blossomwood team chose the I Survived series written by Lauren Tarshis. They decided to theme the car around the Titanic ship for the book I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic. They also designed their own t-shirts to go along with the theme by tie-dying them blue to be the color of water, adding the picture of a life preserver, and using the slogan, "I Survived Greenpower Team".
From November through April, the team will meet weekly to disassemble the car, rebuild it, and rewire the electricity. They will then practice driving again before the next race on April 27, 2019, at Milton Frank Stadium.
