Chaffee Elementary Educator Named AFA State Teacher of the Year
Lori Nelson, a fifth-grade teacher at Chaffee Elementary was given a big surprise at a school assembly today as she is the Air Force Association’s (AFA) Alabama State Teacher of the Year for 2018. AFA Chapter Members Col. Frederick Driesbach USAF (Ret.), and Jay Carlson, presented Ms. Nelson the award as students, her family, and State Board of Education Member Mary Scott Hunter cheered her on in the cafeteria. The award recognizes an individual who demonstrates outstanding performance and dedication to ensuring that students are prepared for aerospace challenges of the future.
Lori Nelson says this “was an unbelievable honor. When they said my name, my heart just started pounding.” Driesbach stated that the Air Force Association “gets lots and lots of applications and Ms. Nelson was clearly the winner. We are proud to recognize Lori Nelson for her dedication to STEM education and for making a difference in the lives of students and our community.” Principal Christina Spivey says Ms. Nelson is a fantastic teacher that often has students standing up, participating in experiments or even singing along to original songs that connect with her lessons.”
As a recipient of the chapter and state awards, Nelson was also presented with checks for $250 and $500. All state winners will compete to earn recognition at the AFA National level next year.
