Back to School Letter From Dr. Wallace

Dear Challenger Elementary Families,

I hope your family is doing well and has enjoyed your time together this summer. If this is your first year at Challenger, WELCOME!! If you are returning, WELCOME BACK!!  Our theme this year is FOCUSED and Flexible in 20-21. We are FOCUSED on providing an excellent education AND Flexible in so many new ways because of our uncertainty with world events right now.

The first day of school is August 17, 2020. Huntsville City Schools will begin this year with two learning opportunities, Remote Learning and The Huntsville Virtual Academy. Huntsville City Schools will provide Remote Learning from August 17,2020 through the first nine weeks of school. Prior to the end of the first nine weeks, HCS will decide about continuing with Remote Learning or transitioning back to traditional learning. The decision will be based on the number of COVID-19 cases in the city of Huntsville and surrounding systems. We are committed to the health and safety of our students and staff.

While I’m excited to begin the new school year, I also understand many, including myself, are concerned and anxious about what this year may bring with the many changes that are happening due to COVID-19. This year presents unique opportunities and challenges for us all.  Our staff is committed to making the best of this situation an ensuring all students at Challenger are provided with the best education possible.

We thank you for trusting your student with us. We also thank you for your willingness to follow the procedures and expectations during these times. As we continue to navigate through these unchartered waters, it is paramount that we work together.

To ensure our students are prepared for the first day of school, we have scheduled a date and time for device distribution for Kinder, 1st, 2nd 3rd grades and new 4th & 5th graders. During the distribution, we will comply with the ADPH guidelines with social distancing and will wear face coverings.

The distribution times will be:
Last Name A-L: Aug 11th 7:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.
Last Name M-Z: Aug. 14th 7:30 a.m.– 1:00 p.m.

HCS will be utilizing a new online platform called Schoology. Your student’s teacher will send instructions for use. It is very interactive, and parents will be able to have a first-hand look at student’s daily assignments.

Although students will not be on campus while we are receiving virtual instruction, we understand the importance of having a nutritious meal. Huntsville City Schools Child Nutrition Program will be providing breakfast and lunch grab n go bag during the time students are receiving virtual instruction. Parent may pick up meal’s curbside from 11:00-1:00 daily, Monday through Friday.
