January News from Dr. Wallace

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Here’s to 2020 FOCUS on excellence here at Challenger Elementary.

It was a pleasure to see everyone back Monday morning. We are looking forward to a purposeful month ahead with lots of learning and growing.

In December, all students took the midyear STAR tests in reading and math. While we made important gains in growth and proficiency in math, we have not made as much progress in reading to make our yearly goal. With this we need your help! PLEASE read with your child every night, please encourage them to make AR goals, please work with your child on spelling and sight word lists. Every little bit helps, and while we spend the majority of our instruction time on reading during the school day, additional time spent reading will help every student.

Starting next week, we will have an additional reading assessment for K-3 called DIBELS. This test is given one on one with a teacher and depending on the grade level includes reading passages to access fluency, reading a list of sight words, reading “nonsense” words to determine phonics knowledge, and letter naming fluency. We will send these results home as soon as the testing has been completed. We know from research in reading that if a child is not reading fluently by third grade, school and learning becomes much more difficult. Please help us by making it a habit to read at home.

Congratulations to the following students who represented their classes for our school spelling bee. Our winner will be announced January 8. Good luck ALL!
