News from Dr. Wallace--August

Dear Challenger Families,

Welcome to a new school year! We are excited to make this the best year yet! We are adding several new faculty members. Ms. Sanchella Graham is our new assistant principal. Ms. Graham has been with Huntsville City Schools for many years, and we are happy to have her join us at Challenger. We have several new teachers to welcome as well. Jennifer Noonan joins us in a special needs classroom, Mary Sue Pylant joins us in kindergarten, Lillian Smith joins us in second grade, Felicia Bright and Tara Lewy join us in third grade, and Erin Singletary joins us in fourth grade. I know Challenger will be even better this year with the addition of our wonderful new teachers. Please welcome them to our school.

This year, we are looking forward to an amazing year. We are pleased to continue several programs and curriculum that have benefitted our students over time. We start our second year with our reading program called Collaborative Classroom. It is a wonderful program, and we saw good progress with it last year. We will also continue Open Circle, our classroom meeting curriculum. All classrooms begin each Tuesday and Thursday with this social skills curriculum. For thirty minutes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, all students in third through fifth grade will have a Walk To Enrichment (WTE) time to strengthen reading and math skills. Students in first through fifth grade will all have an opportunity to sign up for an enrichment club that meets every month. Our teachers and students look forward to these clubs and the fun topics and activities.

It’s official! We are now an Alabama Math Science Technology Initiative (AMSTI) school. Teachers attended a week long math training this summer and will be involved in monthly trainings with the AMSTI math coaches. We look forward to sharing new math strategies for you to try at home to support our work here.

Communication this year will look a bit different. We will now be sending Wednesday folders with work and notices, instead of on Friday. This will provide more time for you to check work and notices during the week. I also found good response to Schoolcast text messages and will continue to use Schoolcast text and phone messages. The log in letter for this system will be sent home soon. We also invite you to follow us on Instagram at challengerelem. We will be sending out a daily photo of our school day. Our PTA this year is also dedicated to getting more information to you on their Facebook page. Please follow us there at Challenger Elementary PTA.

This year, we are really looking to connect with more of community partners. We are blessed to have worked closely with our neighbors at Good Shepard Catholic Church, Morningside Baptist Church, BP Oil Co., and Weatherly Road Assembly of God, all have supported us over the years. This year, we would like to connect with more community partners. We are also hoping to start a Grandparents Club. If you know of any grandparetns who would enjoy being part of the club, please let us know.

We look forward to seeing you, working with your wonderful kids, and having a joy filled school year!
