Challenger Middle School Greenpower Racing recently received two grants to support their 2016-2017 race season. Our program has expanded to 2 cars and 2 teams - we now have a Year 1 Team, the Rocketeers, who built their new kit car from scratch (The Challenger) and our Year 2 Team, the Eagles, who are studying aerodynamics and drive trains to modify the existing car (Charlie). To help with the cost of expanding our program, we applied for a STEM Program grant from PPG Aerospace. This grant was approved gaining $1000 to outfit our school for two teams and to provide funds for enhancements to the Year-2 car. Also, students of the Eagles Race team presented a Greenpower program overview to visiting members of the Optimist Club to raise funds for a trip to the Greenpower at Indy event coming up in mid-May. This Indy sponsored partnership event will involve a Greenpower race at the Indianapolis 500 facility with Greenpower teams from around the country and engineering sessions with Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis’ department of engineering. Challenger will send its best car to this event and students from both teams. Avion Solutions, Inc. also supports the team financially, providing this season’s t-shirts for the 24 students. Teacher/Sponsors are Barbara Hunt and Teri Mitchell.
On Saturday, January 14th, the Challenger Middle School Math Team participated in the Alabama School of Fine Arts Math Competition in Birmingham, Alabama. Owen Martin won 7th place individual in the Pre-Algebra division and Kyle Mince won 3rd place individual in the Algebra division.
