Heat Advisory

Due to the heat advisory in the forecast for today, HCS will be operating under our heightened awareness weather protocols.  The Heightened Awareness protocols will remain in effect throughout the duration of the heat advisory. Our schools will take extra precautions to ensure the safety of our students by limiting outdoor activities and keeping students hydrated.  Our middle and high schools will be utilizing the Alabama High School Athletic Association guidelines for outdoor heat for all our students involved in any extracurricular activities, such as sports, band, etc.

The Challenger Middle School Greenpower teams build, modify and race F24 electric kit cars in the GreenpowerUSA competitons. Challenger has two teams, the Eagles and the Rockets. The Eagles team is composed of students who modify an existing car that was previously built from the kit and the Rocketeers team is composed of students who are initially building the car from the kit.

How to Join / Membership Requirements:
Students are placed on these teams when they apply for and take the Greenpower course open to 7th and 8th graders. Space is limited by what safety dictates in a construction/race environment - approximately 12 students per class. These courses are academic in nature meeting STEM standards for the state.
Other Info:
Challenger has competed in 4 races since our beginning in Spring 2015 and have placed first is two of those races. The Spring race at Whitesburg in 2016 debuted Charlie's body overhaul sporting a body wrap and also a nose designed by students in Challenger's class using Siemen's Solid Edge software and printed at Grissom High School in a 36 hour print. This nose design is now going to England on the car that Team USA is submitting in the kit car race at the International Finals at the Rockingham Speedway in Corby, England in October 2016.
