5th Grade Student-Led Conferences

In preparation for middle school, the fifth grade team coordinates parent & teacher conferences with the student as the star! We conduct "Student-Led Conferences". This format encourages all families and family members to attend and participate. The purpose of this conference is to reflect on the child's growth and learning this year while looking towards your child’s academic goals. During the 30 minute conference period, your child will take an active role by independently showing you current data and share his/her goals. The child’s teachers will be there to support your child to help answer any questions the parent may have. Parents sign up for a conference time via our SignUp Genius.

There are many learning experiences and benefits for our fifth grade students that accompany this format including the following: active participation in the learning process, increased self-confidence, development of leadership skills, organization, responsibility for their learning, communication and critical thinking skills. Benefits for the family: a longer conference time to gather information about your child's academic and social progress this year, the joy of seeing your child present information and projects they having been working on, plus hear your child’s goals for his/her own future.

There are 3-4 families spread around the room at the same time. Each family will choose a table and your child will begin their presentation, just to your family. Having other families in the room, aside from being more efficient, still allows for each child to be more at ease and also duplicates the sense of community we feel every day by being with our learning friends. Each child’s teachers will rotate among the groups and be available to support each child with their presentation if needed. Each student will follow a conference check off list, and each parent will be asked to reflect on their child’s presentation to write a brief compliment for their child. In addition, we encourage each parent to contact their child’s teacher to arrange a time to privately discuss any further questions or concerns at any time throughout the year.

We are very pleased to be offering this format to our fifth grade families to kick off a great fifth grade year. It is an exciting journey and honor to help best prepare our students for the middle school experience.
