Principal Message 3-1-21

Grissom Parents & Students,

We have had a great week back with students!  Coming up next week….ACT Workkeys for seniors (more information below).
March 9th will be a remote learning day for 9th, 10th, and 12th graders.  11th graders will report to school at 8:30 a.m. to participate in the ACT+ Writing test.
11th Grade ACT + Writing Information: All 11th grade students are required by the state to take the ACT + Writing assessment. Prior to taking the test, students must complete the demographics portion of the assessment. Traditional 11th grade students will complete demographics in their English classes next week. We will also be holding several sessions at the school next week for our HVA 11th Grade Students. HVA students should choose ONE session to attend and be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before to get checked in. HVA students may park out back and enter the school through the gym lobby where they will be checked in by staff and directed to their assigned room. Students will not be able to take the ACT on March 9th if they do not complete the demographics with us next week.

Demographics Sessions for HVA Students (choose one)
 

  • Thursday, March 4th: 8:30, 11:30 or 1:30
  • Friday, March 5th: 8:30, 11:30 or 1:30

 
The ACT + Writing test will be given on Tuesday, March 9th for ALL 11th Grade students. Both traditional and HVA 11th grade students must be in their assigned testing room no later than 8:30 that day to take the test. All testing will be held on BB Hall upstairs. Please be sure to bring your calculator and a form of ID with you (i.e. Driver's License).
 

ADJUSTED STATE TESTING SCHEDULE:
 

10th Grade Pre-ACT: April 21st & 22nd  

  • A-L:        April 21st
  • M-Z:       April 22nd


ACCESS for ELLs Testing Make ups – March 16th: (All identified EL students)

12th Grade ACT WorkKeys – March 3rd : (We ONLY need to test seniors who have not already earned their CCRI.  This will be roughly 100 students.

11th Grade ACT + Writing- March 9th -: (All 11th graders must test on this one day per ACT & State Guidelines)  ACT + Writing Makeup testing will be April 6th.

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

 

Current 9th Graders/Rising 10th Graders-Class of 2024
          
  From Mr. Vasquez:

  1. Registration information (including the Course Registration Form) was posted by English teachers to their classroom Schoology pages for students to access. It is also posted on the 9th Grade Schoology Group page.  
  2. For Traditional Students, Course Registration Forms are due to their English teachers by March 4, 2021.
  3. For Virtual Students, Course Registration Forms are also due by March 4, 2021. Registration Forms for virtual students can be dropped off at the front of Grissom High School or they can be emailed to Mr. Vasquez.
  4. Registration Forms can also be accessed online, along with the Course Catalog through the Huntsville City Schools website
  5. Students interested in participating in the Huntsville City Schools Career and Technical Education Program(programs like Welding, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology etc.) have to complete the Huntsville City Schools Career and Technical Education Travel Application which can be accessed through Clever.  The deadline to complete the application is March 8, 2021.
  6. The last day to request a change to a student's course request is March 8, 2021.

 

Current 10th Graders/Rising 11th Graders-Class of 2023

 From Mrs. Futey:

  1. Current 10th graders have begun course selection for 11th grade during history classes this week. 
  2. A video presentation and course selection forms can be found on the GHS - 10th Grade Student Group Schoology page or on student's history course pages. 
  3. Registration Forms can also be accessed online, along with the Course Catalog through the Huntsville City Schools website.
  4. Students interested in participating in the Huntsville City Schools Career and Technical Education Program (programs like Welding, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology etc.) have to complete the Huntsville City Schools Career and Technical Education Travel Application which can be accessed through Clever.  The deadline to complete the application is March 8, 2021.
  5. Traditional student's course selection forms will be collected on March 4th and 5th in history courses. 
  6. Virtual students should scan and email their forms to Mrs. Futey or drop them in the box at the front door of GHS by March 5th.  Virtual students who are unable to print a form may stop by and pick one up from the front office.

Current 11th Graders/Rising 12th Graders-Class of 2022
 
From Mrs. Gray:

  1. Registration has begun for the 2021-2022 school year.  I have visited with social studies classes this week.   
  2. If you missed my presentation, you can pick-up your course request form / Packet in the front office. 
  3. There is also a video presentation that you can find on the Huntsville City Schools website. If you have trouble locating this the information will also be posted in the 11th grade Schoology group on Monday. 
  4. Registration Forms can also be accessed online, along with the Course Catalog through the Huntsville City Schools website.
  5.   6. All course request forms are due March 5th.  The last day to make changes to your course request is March the 8th.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email Mrs. Gray.

 

Computers, Schoology, & Zoom should be functioning as “normal” at this time.  Students should be using computers and these platforms every day.

  • If your child is having any computer issues, please email Gail Meyers or call the main office 256-428-8000.
  • Students should be checking assignments on Schoology every block during their class time if they are not on campus.
  • HVA students must log in to Schoology during their class time in order to be counted present for the block.
  • If your child is quarantined, please email the grade level counselor and teacher for any assistance with assignments. Please email your child’s teacher for assistance or questions with a specific class. If you cannot get in touch with the teacher, please email the grade level counselor or grade level assistant principal.
