Principal Message 9-14-20
Grissom Parents & Students,
Please read this newsletter carefully. I have highlighted anything new from last week. Please see the letter sent 9-4-2020 regarding building reopening located at the end of this letter. Congratulations to our National Merit Semi-Finalists! -Samantha Abercrombie, Franscine Garcia, Ian McKenzie, and Jessica Smith REMINDER: Anyone attending any school function must wear a mask at all times. This past Thursday, our students did a very good job of keeping their masks on during the football game at Milton Frank Stadium. However, I noticed several parents not wearing a face mask. If you are not willing to wear a face mask at Grissom High School functions, STAY AT HOME. This is an HCS regulation for events at this time. Please sign up for our PTSA School Newsletter on the GHS PTSA website. The newsletter provides additional information for all of our sports teams, clubs and events of Grissom High School. Please visit our website for teacher emails and other important information.
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL beginning Sept. 21st :
Arrival and Dismissal will be the same procedure as last year. Please see the Morning & Afternoon Traffic Map. For new parents and students, please study the traffic maps. Morning entry points are located at the Freshman Academy entrance (west side Haysland Road - where the Security Welcome Center is located) or Meadowbrook Drive (east side - near the baseball field). Meadowbrook Drive is “enter only” in the morning. Freshman Academy entrance is “enter only” with the exception of buses and special needs. Freshman Academy drop off is double lane and near the steps. Meadowbrook Drive drop off is located just past the auditorium. The Freshman Academy drop off is the fastest and most efficient. Please use Freshman Academy drop off if at all possible. Afternoon entry points are the same for Freshman Academy and this carline runs the same as morning with double lanes. However, the east side Meadowbrook Drive gate is exit only. The traffic pattern on the east side is opposite of the morning pattern. Please use the Freshman Academy area for pick up if at all possible. You will then avoid student driver exits. When looking at the map, parents who are dropping off students should remain on the red map arrows only. Do not enter the parking lot. The parking is for student drivers, buses, and special needs students. Walkers are not allowed to exit through gates. The front entrance is for walkers and bikers. Do not drive in the front entrance. This is not a pickup or drop off area.

Please understand that if you choose Edgenuity, you will be on a virtual platform that is completely self-paced. Otherwise, HVA students will continue working in the same/similar manner as we have for the past 4 weeks. Edgenuity curriculum may also be assigned by GHS teachers in units or lessons.

Letter from 9-4-2020
Grissom High School will begin face to face classes for “traditional” students the week of Monday, September 21, 2020. I have attached a calendar showing the cohort schedule for September and October. We will have 2 cohorts. Cohort 1 will be the “orange” cohort. Cohort 2 will be the “brown” cohort. The orange cohort will consist of students with the last name beginning with A-L. The brown cohort will consist of students with the last name beginning with M-Z. If your family consists of multiple last names, please contact your grade level principal for direction. School buses will run as they have in previous years. Students who are scheduled to go to school and desire to ride the bus, should check the HCS bus schedule on the HCS website under “parent info” and then under “transportation. Most of our routes are the same as last year. Students will be seated in a seating chart on the bus and will be assigned a seat. If you have questions regarding buses, you may contact Apple Bus Company 256-361-0919.
Arrival to school will begin at 8:00 a.m. This is a change from last year. Please do not drop your child off before 8:00 a.m. Parents dropping students off to school should enter through the Freshman Academy gate (off Haysland Road) where our new Security Welcome Center is located. Parents may use both lanes in front of Freshman Academy for drop off. Drivers and all other vehicles should enter from the Meadowbrook gate. Drivers should have a parking pass and an assigned parking space. You may register and pay for parking on our website at the student parking link. Students must wear a face covering while on campus and while on buses. Upon arrival, students should enter through the Freshman Academy, gym lobby or attendance office and then proceed directly to their 1st block class. Hallways will be marked as “one way.” Students should follow arrows marked on the floor for hallways. Students may purchase a breakfast as they enter through the doorways. Class begins at 8:30 a.m.
During the school day we will have two nurses on campus to assist as needed. Class changes will occur after 90-minute blocks. We will dismiss students to their next block class in shifts to avoid crowded hallways. Students will follow arrows on our “one way” hallways. Restroom breaks will take place during class and not during class changes. This will be done to ensure social distancing and cleaning of restrooms. Students may purchase a prepackaged lunch or bring a lunch from home. Lunch counts will be taken at the beginning of the day and delivered to classrooms during 3rd block.
School ends at 3:40 p.m. Dismissal will occur in shifts to avoid crowded hallways. Buses will load near the attendance office. Students who are picked up by parents should exit through Freshman Academy. Students should leave campus promptly.
We are very excited to see our students!
