Principal's Message 8-1-22

Grissom Parents & Students,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!  Classes will begin Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at 8:30 a.m.  Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. each day.  Students should report to their 1A class upon entry into the building.

Students should follow the schedule they received during orientation, or an updated schedule sent to them by their counselor, if applicable. If your child did not pick up a schedule during orientation, please stop by the attendance office between 8-3 on Monday, August 1, 2022, to retrieve a schedule.  Any student who is unsure of where to go for 1A, should report to the Media Center for assistance. Teachers will be available in the Media Center to assist students in finding their 1A Class.  Updated schedules will be distributed during 1A.

Computer distribution will take place this week and next week.  Computers will be distributed during the first week of school, for those who have not picked them up.  Teachers are aware that many students will not have computers right away.  Please assure your child that this will be o.k. Gail Meyers is our computer technician.  She is working daily to distribute computers and update computer needs.

Dress Code

Please make sure your child is ready for school and adhering to dress code.  Please remember that SHORTS MUST BE MID-THIGH LENGTH. Mid drift shirts and spaghetti straps are not permitted. This will be enforced beginning the first day of school.  Also, Grissom High School is a “No Cell Phone Zone” from 8:30 a.m.-3:40 p.m.  Phones will be allowed during lunch time only.

Student drivers must have a parking decal to park at Grissom high School.  Please click the parking registration link to register.  You must also pay the $20.00 parking fee.  Once registration and payment are complete, the student may pick up the parking decal in the attendance office with Mrs. Varmette.

Arrival and Dismissal will be the same procedure as last year.

For new parents and students, morning entry points are located at the Freshman Academy entrance (west side - where the security guardhouse is located) or Meadowbrook Drive (east side - near the baseball field).  Meadowbrook Drive is “enter only” in the morning.  Freshman Academy entrance is “enter only” except for buses and special needs.  Freshman Academy drop off is located near the steps. Freshman Academy drop off is double lane. Please be mindful that we now have 4 classrooms in the Freshman Academy parking lot. The speed limit is 5 MPH. Students should cross at the crosswalk when entering portable classrooms.

Meadowbrook Drive drop off is located just past the auditorium.  The Freshman Academy drop off is the fastest and most efficient way to drop off your child at Grissom High School. Please use the Freshman Academy drop off if possible. Eastside drop off should only be used for students with large band instruments.

Afternoon entry points are the same for Freshman Academy and that carline runs the same as the morning with double lanes. However, the east side Meadowbrook gate (by the baseball field) is exit only.  The traffic pattern on the east side is opposite of the morning pattern.  Please use the Freshman Academy area for pick up if possible.  You will then avoid student driver exits.

The parking lot is for student drivers, buses, and special needs students.

The front entrance is for walkers and bikers.  Do not drive in the front entrance.  This is not a pickup or drop off area.

Teacher Conferences

Addressing Concerns

It is always best to handle concerns at the lowest level possible.  This will ensure concerns are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.  Our faculty and coaching staff are trained professionals, dedicated to supporting their students.  Please give the teachers and coaches an opportunity to resolve issues at the classroom level first.
Step 1. If your concern involves your student’s teacher or coach, please email that teacher or coach first.  You may request a conference or try to resolve the issue via email.
Step 2.  If after attempting to resolve your concern with the teacher or coach you feel your concern is not resolved, please contact the appropriate grade-level assistant principal.
Step 3.  If after attempting to resolve your concern first with the teacher and second with the appropriate grade-level assistant principal you feel your concern is not adequately addressed, please involve the principal, Mrs. Jeanne Greer.  Appointments may be made through the office manager, Mrs. Laurie McGuffey.
