Hawk News from The Principal 1/18
Dear HCES Family,
Last week was a great week of teaching, learning, and celebrating success!
We are planning AR Mystery Trips for the end of the year for students who reach their 3rd and 4th quarter goals. Please help encourage your child to read and reach their goals for the 3rd and 4th quarters (second semester).
Student safety is paramount.
Student safety is our number one concern. For that reason, we must continue our normal arrival and dismissal procedures. There is no parent walk-up pick-up on the school side of the building. If parents choose to walk to pick up their student(s) they have two options: 1. Complete the Walker Agreement Form and park in the neighborhood and walk to the pick-up location in the back of the school, or 2. walk to the crosswalk on the carline side of the breezeway with a sign showing the student(s) name (please note that these names will be called approximately 5 minutes after carline has begun). Student safety is our only option. I know that parents are trying to avoid the carline, however, student safety is paramount. The dismissal line will be significantly reduced Tuesday when AlphaBest begins.
After School Tutoring
Huntsville City Schools has adjusted the after-school tutoring programming for the second/spring semester. HCES will continue to offer after-school tutoring for our students who have reading needs per the Alabama Literacy Act. We have contacted those parents and have shared the schedule for tutoring for the second/spring semester. Again, after-school tutoring is only be offered for students who are invited for the second/spring semester.
The new after-school program, AlphaBEST, begins Tuesday, January 18th! In order to attend you should have received a welcome letter. There is currently a waitlist. If you registered and did not receive the welcome letter, your student is on the waitlist. AlphaBest is working hard to ensure they are fully staffed so they can add more students to the program. See attached for additional information. Click here to go to their website to enroll.
Students cannot be checked-out after 2:00 p.m. Thank you for having your required I.D. ready in order to check students out.
The ADPH has now adopted the new CDC quarantine guidelines. Please continue to alert your child's teacher (please include myself and our office aide on the email) if your child or someone in your home is positive for COVID. Masking is required while on campus. Please make sure your child is wearing a well-fitting mask when they enter the building. We are not equipped to provide masks daily. If you or a member of your family are positive, we ask that you do not enter our building to pick up your children or their materials. Please call us if you need us to walk your children out to you. If you are positive, please send someone else to the school to pick up needed materials for your children. We are happy to work with you, please call us at 256-428-7180.
Please know that if you have placed a block on your child's EZPay account to NOT purchase snacks, they will be unable to provide ice cream for your child, so make sure you didn't set blocks on your child's account.
Our cafeteria has halted ice cream sales due to a supply shortage, however, we are still taking birthday orders. If your child has a birthday, you can purchase ice cream for the class to celebrate and it does not have to be on a Friday, however, Ms. LaTonya Williams (our cafeteria manager) does need to know this in advance so she can place her ice cream order. I would contact your child's teacher and/or Ms. LaTonya a few days before the ice cream is needed. To find the EZ pay website, visit the HCS website, click on the parent tab and then click on Breakfast and lunch. Scroll down and you will see the EZ pay link.
The state has shared that our school menus may be a little different due to the supply chain shortage and staffing shortages experienced around the state. Please know there could be menu changes due to the delays in shipments and order changes.
New roof for HCES:
Thank you for not using the playground closest to the middle school. The roofing team is beginning work above the playground. We expect the project to last a few more months.
If you need to contact Dr. Perkins or any school staff, please do so by email. This way we can schedule a meeting (if required) and you can have our undivided attention. Please do not attempt to hold discussions during carline or other times when student safety is a top priority. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Thank you so much for your support,
