Hawk News from The Principal 5/9

Dear HCES Family,

Thank you for supporting our faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers left today with huge smiles on their faces. I personally want to thank you for making them feel special.

DIBELS testing will continue this week for our K-3 students. All students, K-5 will take the STAR Reading and Math tests this week. This is our final opportunity to show Huntsville City Schools and the entire state of Alabama, how hard we've been working and how far we've come.

Teachers have begun sending information about mystery field trips. Please do not spill the beans about where the students are going. If you choose to tell your student, please remind them it is a surprise so they do not ruin the mystery for the other students. We all want the students to be surprised!

If you plan to eat lunch with your student, please plan to meet them in the cafeteria during their specified lunchtime. We continue to welcome families during lunch. However, federal guidelines prohibit outside food (i.e., Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, etc.) in the cafeteria. If you would like to eat restaurant food with your child, you are welcome to check them out for lunch and sign them back in at the conclusion of lunch.

While schools are open and attempting to return to normal activity, school campuses are closed. This means that ALL visitors must sign/scan in with their ID. I am sure everyone understands the significance of this requirement. There is no exception to this rule. I always think of it this way: what if there is a fire? How will fire fighters and admin ensure that everyone is accounted for? Please remember that safety is our top priority. Please make sure your contact list is accurate. Only those who are on your child's list in PowerSchools will be able to see/eat with the child. Once visitors are signed in, it is important that they maintain a sense of purpose. Roaming the building could create a safety concern. Parents can celebrate birthdays by purchasing ice cream from the cafeteria. Your teacher can provide more information on this. Due to our student growth, the cafeteria is crowded. Guests may need to sit at a different table with their students. Please refrain from taking pictures of other students. Please remember that we must respect the privacy rights and wishes of other families.

Parent/teacher/admin conferences must be scheduled ahead of time. Hampton Cove Elementary School is successful due to parent involvement and protected instructional time. Although state testing is complete, we still have work to do and teaching and learning continue in preparation for end-of-year assessments. We cannot accommodate impromptu conferences.

If you need to contact Dr. Perkins or any school staff, please do so by email. This way we can schedule a meeting (if required) and you can have our undivided attention. Please do not attempt to hold discussions during carline or other times when student safety is a top priority. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered their time to make HCES a success. If you are interested in volunteering, most of our opportunities are organized through our fantastic PTA. Please be on the lookout for future opportunities to volunteer.
