Hawk News from The Principal 8/16

Hello HCES families,

Thank you for joining us Friday night at our Back to School Bash! We hope you will make plans to join us on August 24th from 5-7 pm for our PTA Open House! We will begin in the cafeteria and then move into our classrooms.

If you are Covid positive and need to pick up your children, we ask that you call us and we will gather your children and walk them out to you. Please do not enter our building if you are positive with Covid. We are trying to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and staff.

Please read the specific arrival and dismissal procedures below to ensure we have a smooth arrival and dismissal. We are working hard to get afternoon dismissal completed by 3:00 p.m. and we have been successful several times this week. I need to remind parents that we do not have a park and walk-up option. I am trying to keep everyone as socially distanced as possible. If you are parked in the middle school line, you can walk up at 2:40 and we will begin calling your elementary children down. Please remind anyone picking up students that they should not walk over to the area where our students are dismissing. It is very hectic and busy and we do not want others in the way of us trying to load our students into the cars who have parked and have waited to pick up their children. Our main priority is the safety of our students and getting the car line moving.

Please ensure your child's teacher knows how they will go home each and every day. If you tell them they are a bus rider, your child's teacher must know which bus they are to ride. Please share with your child's teacher. If you are a car rider, please make a sign with your child's name, grade, and teacher's name to place in the front dash of the car when you come for dismissal pick up.  This sign is helpful to the teachers on car duty because it helps us to call names and expedite the car rider line.

If your child is going to afterschool tutoring, you should have received an email this afternoon from Mrs. Smotherman for confirmation. If you have not registered yet, there is still time.

If your child is a walker, we must have a signed walker agreement on file.

Please continue to alert your child's teacher if your child or someone in your home is positive for COVID. Masking is required while on campus. If you or a member of your family are positive, we ask that you do not enter our building to pick up your children or their materials. Please call us if you need us to walk your children out to you. If you are positive and in quarantine, please send someone else to the school to pick up needed materials for your children. We are happy to work with you, please call us at 256-428-7180.

We are still working through the issues with Powerschools and Blackboard (our communication system). Once we learn how to share with parents, you will receive your log-in information.

Mrs. Malena Smotherman is our site facilitator and you can email her with any questions about Afterschool Tutoring.

I am very excited to announce that we will be working with Spoiled Rotten Photography this year! Spoiled Rotten Photography will provide fall and spring pictures, pictures for the yearbook, as well as other packages where parents can mix and match poses. We will still have class pictures in the spring and they will offer sessions for elective Christmas portraits. Their prices are very affordable and I think our parents will be pleased with this change. We will still provide parent information for the pictures (just as we have for Lifetouch) and if you prefer not to have school pictures with us, parents will need to "opt-out". We will have more information during our orientation times. Fall pictures are scheduled for August 17th and 18th. Your child's teacher has their class time and will share it with you. If you do not want your child to be photographed, please email me and ask to opt out of pictures.

During a recent HCS Board Meeting, Hampton Cove Schools were approved for three learning cottages that will be housed by the pavilion (where previous learning cottages were housed several years ago). The learning cottages are still in the process of being connected, so once they are ready, I will share their purpose. The learning cottages are not in use at this time.

Your child will also receive a "Wednesday Folder" from HCES. Our teachers will send home any information, grade papers, flyers, etc. on Wednesday, so please make a habit of checking their backpacks on Wednesdays.

Thank you all for your support,

Ms. Spivey
