HCS Changemaker: Ms. Mary Trumm
Congratulations to Ms. Mary Trumm, a first-grade teacher at Lakewood Elementary School, who has been selected as an HCS Changemaker!
Ms. Trumm, who is originally from California, wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. She would go home from school and use a small chalkboard to teach her brother and niece what she learned that day. As she got older, she developed a passion for experiencing the world through her nieces and nephews. “Now,” she says, “I have a job where I can experience the world through the eyes of my kids... my students.”
“Ms. Trumm has always dedicated a lot of time to the students,” says Lakewood Elementary Principal Fred Barnes, “she’s one that cares a lot about the students.” Mr. Barnes also adds that she spends a majority of her free time preparing for lessons so that she can maximize student learning. Ms. Trumm says that her favorite subject is probably reading, and students can often be found working with poetry, sentence strips, and other materials to ensure they master the grade-level concepts.
When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Trumm enjoys reading when there is enough time. She also enjoys playing board games with friends and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Her favorite games are things that involve strategy and analytical skills, such as Skip-Bo and Code Names. She also enjoys being involved with crafts like sewing and painting.
Ms. Trumm says, “I love my students. Every morning I get to hug them or give them a little handshake. I love getting to know them and seeing how they get excited over little things.” She has an infectious passion for what she does and the relationships she develops with her students is sure to follow them in a positive way for years to come.
