HCS Special Olympians Compete in Area Bowling Championship

Earlier this week, over 140 athletes from North Alabama participated in the Special Olympics Area Bowling Championship.  This year’s competition was held at the Pin Palace in Huntsville, and it’s an annual event that’s been taking place for over 50 years.  Sherri Goodwin, Resource Coordinator with Huntsville City Schools Special Education, described how much the students loved the event and look forward to it each year.  Ms. Goodwin also shared what a great feeling it is to see everyone hanging out together and having a good time.

Columbia High School student Jayla Daniels said she really likes to bowl and that “even if you’re not good, it’s cool to be here and have fun.”  Another Columbia High bowler, James Wesley, says that preparing for the championship involves “practicing a lot, and just keep practicing.”

Top finishers from the Area Championship will qualify for the State Tournament, which will be held at Troy University during the 2020 Special Olympic State Games in May.  The results and qualifiers will be announced next week.
