Dear Huntsville Junior High School Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are thrilled to welcome you back to school and cannot wait to meet our new and returning students! I hope you are enjoying a wonderful last few days of summer and are recharged and ready to start a new school year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. I welcome and value your dedication to excellence in education and I look forward to working with you and your students.
It is truly an honor for me to move back to Huntsville and work where I was a student teacher 17 years ago! I am privileged to work with an outstanding staff to make it a smooth transition for our students. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. LaKeeta Perkins, our new assistant principal. While Dr. Perkins and Dr. Coffey will serve all of our students, Dr. Coffey will focus primarily on 7th grade students and Dr. Perkins will focus primarily on 8th grade students. We are excited to work closely with you to ensure the success and well-being of all HJHS students.
Each year brings positive change. This includes a few teacher additions to our staff. We are delighted to welcome JulieAnn Smith, a veteran teacher and administrator, who has joined us to teach English 8. In addition, we gained another new unit in Career Preparedness A for all 8th grade students. We welcome Mr. Arthur Fortin to HJHS who will be facilitating this course (which is the first half of the course required for high school graduation). Mr. Fortin also has served as the swim coach at Huntsville High for the past few years. Both new teachers bring an advanced skill set and an experienced approach to meeting students’ academic and emotional needs.
We have been working hard all summer to plan for a safe opening of school and to implement best practices. Our skilled and devoted staff is already planning and preparing lessons for your student(s). Our enthusiastic office team is registering new families, ordering needed materials and updating student files. Our hard working and conscientious custodians have spent the entire summer cleaning the facility and preparing floors and surfaces. Our much-appreciated PTA is gearing up to welcome families, provide volunteer opportunities, and offer other exciting events and programs. We are indeed a joyous and caring community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.
Procedures are in place to create social distancing to the extent possible while creating an environment where students can academically thrive. New signage is being installed throughout the building to guide students, and our lunch schedule has been modified to allow for students to eat in the cafeteria while decreasing the number of students in each lunch. Students will still be able to carry their backpacks to class and technology devices will be distributed on Monday, August 9th. We are also asking teachers to provide more time for mask breaks, hand washing, and opportunities to access outdoor learning spaces (weather permitting).
We have high expectations for each and every student. Our faculty encourages our students to be kind, compassionate, and inquisitive. Together with our dedicated staff, we strive to make connections with students to help them feel valued, accepted, and safe. This year our HJHS motto of “Developing Responsible Citizens and Preparing for Tomorrow’s Opportunities” will guide our mission to provide a rigorous and joyful school environment. Whether we are learning in person or remotely at HVA, our goal is to encourage active student engagement to foster a lifetime love for learning.
Partnering with families will be crucial this year. We appreciate your support as you work additionally with your students at home. We encourage families to stay connected and informed by following our HJHS Facebook page and website for important updates.
Reminder: Students and parents will have the opportunity to tour the school and walk their schedule during the times below. Please make sure to wear a mask if you would like to enter the building.
