Reading Matters!

Have you ever wondered why the Staff at Jones Valley wants your child to Read at home? There are many studies supporting Reading but one of the most famous studies was done by Nagy, Anderson and Herman in 1987. Altough many years ago since that study, a ton of studies continue to support Reading at home.

Basically here are the FACTS:

  • A student who reads 20 minutes per day will be exposed to 1.8 million words per year and scores in the 90th percentile on standardized tests
  • A student who reads 5 minutes per day will be exposed to 282,000 words per year and scores in the 50th percentile on standardized tests
  • A student who reads 1 minute per day will be exposed to 8,000 words per year and scores in the 10th percentile on standardized tests
  • PLEASE, Please take the time to encourage your child to read and be an expample of reading yourself!
