Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
JVE sixth graders do! In math they are practicing old number skills and learning new ones using money. They are creating “budgets” and balancing them using math skill like adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. They are figuring what fraction each expense category consumes of their budgets and they are controlling their food budgets using fractional computation to reduce and increase serving sizes fo recipes. They will compute unit prices and stretch their dollars using percents off coupons. They will compute interest rates, both paying and earning, and try their hands at (fantasy) investing. They will graph their budgets and investments and learn to read and create spreadsheets. Hang on to your nickels and pennies, because JVE sixth graders are adding (and subtracting, multiplying and dividing!) them up.
