4th Grade Visits Falls Mill
Fourth graders visited Falls Mill Tuesday, Oct 17th on an Earthscope field trip. Falls Mill is listed on the National Historic Regestry and was built in 1873 as a cotton and woolen factory, the mill was later converted for use as a cotton gin, then as a wood working shop and grist mill. Today the mill houses the Museum of Power and Industry, Inc. and the 32 foot waterwheel still powers machinery on four levels of the building.
Students interacted in cooperative groups to problem solve decisions pioneers would have had to consider as they settled the area. What would you pack if you only had one covered wagon? Where would be the safest place in this location to build your cabin? What natural resources would you look for as you chose your homesite? These are some of the questions the groups had to answer.
