ACT Math Tips

  • Be able to convert easily between percentages, decimals, and fractions.
    • Convert from percent to decimal: Divide by 100. This is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 15% is equivalent to the decimal 0.15.
    • Convert from decimal to percent: simply multiply by 100. This is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the right. To change the decimal 0.22 to a percent, we move the decimal point two places to the right and get 22%.
    • Convert from percent to fraction: Divide by 100 . This is the same thing we do to convert a percent to a fraction, but we write it as a fraction this time and then simplify. The number before the (%) sign becomes the numerator, and the denominator is 100. For example, to convert 10% to a fraction, we divide the 10 by 100 and simplify the fraction. 10/100 = 1/10
  • Know your triangles. 30-60-90, 45-45-90
    • The basic 30-60-90 triangle ratio is:
    • Side opposite the 30° angle: x
    • Side opposite the 60° angle: x*√3
    • Side opposite the 90° angle: 2x
    • In a 45°−45°−90°45°−45°−90° triangle, the length of the hypotenuse is 2√2 times the length of a leg.
  • Be familiar with Pythagorean triples – 3,4, 5 and 5, 12, 13.
