Looking Forward 4/6/20

Monday, April 6th is an A day.

Looking forward I see a lot of adventure and uncertainty ahead.  Please know that the faculty and staff are working hard to make the transition to online learning as effective as possible.  Our teachers are busy planning instruction and assignments that will be reasonable in length and rigor.  We want to keep all students challenged without frustrating them.  It will be extremely important for parents and students to communicate openly with teachers throughout the remainder of the school year.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to teachers with questions/comments/concerns in a timely manner so they have time to make adjustments or respond as appropriate. 


Beginning Monday, April 6, all courses will begin online.  Teachers will use Canvas as the primary means of communicating instruction and assignments to students.  Instructions for accessing your student’s Canvas account are attached.  You are encouraged to check Canvas if you have any questions about assigned work or due dates. Students are expected to turn in all assigned work in a timely manner.  Teachers are required to grade one or two assignments per week in each class.


Monday, April 6th will be a digital Open House.  This will give students the opportunity to make sure they are able to access their online classes and communicate with their teachers.  Teachers will have the opportunity to communicate expectations for the remainder of the year and make sure students know how to reach them.


All teachers will have office hours from 9:00 a.m. until noon each school day.  This means they will be accessible by email or through Canvas during this time.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to teachers if you have questions.  Many teachers have said they will be available throughout the school day.  Teachers may set up Zoom, Google Meet, or Canvas discussions to assist multiple students at one time.  All student issued laptops have the cameras and microphones disabled so only the teacher can be seen and heard at this time.


Each school will have curbside wifi available beginning April 6th.  This will allow any student to pull up in the parking lot, access the school wifi, and upload/download materials.  The wifi will extend 300 yards from the building.  Please remain in your vehicle.


Beginning Monday, April 6th, all schools will serve grab and go lunches.  The student must be in the car to receive a lunch.  Please do not leave your vehicle  - just grab … and go. 


We are required to limit the number of people in the building as we continue to practice social distancing.  Email is the best way to reach all of us.  New Century staff will work in the morning as needed and Lee HS staff will work in the afternoon.  We will do our best to address all your questions and concerns in a timely manner while keeping the health and well-being of our employees in mind.


Huntsville City Schools has reserved the VBC Arena for June 25 and 26 in the hopes that we will be able to conduct graduation ceremonies at that time.  No other details will be available until we find out if it is going to be possible.  I am just letting you know so that you can keep those dates in mind as you make plans for your summer.
