Welcome Back!

Welcome Back August 2020

written by Ms. Roby

It is going to be a great year at New Century Technology High School!  The teachers are busy preparing their lessons and honing their videotaping skills.  The students are eagerly viewing their schedules and comparing with friends to make sure they will be in classes together ... one day. The whole school is vibrant as preparations are well underway for the start of what promises to be an innovative and adventurous new school year.

Education is what you make it.  You can choose to be challenged and learn a lot or you can choose to sit back and just do what is necessary to get by.  Teachers at New Century are not the type to sit back.  They are enthusiastically preparing lessons to engage, inspire, and challenge our students.  We might not be able to open school in person right now, but we are able to be there for our students and lead them on an exciting educational journey.

We are glad that you choose to be here at New Century with us.  Thank you for your patience as we step out into new territory and try to envision what education can be in this new normal.  We are all in this together and I look forward to seeing how we all rise to the challenge laid before us and show the world what we are made of.  New Century has a great team and together we can all make this year – and every year – a great learning experience for our students.

Weekly Newsletter

Each Sunday I send a newsletter to keep families posted on current school news.  If you have not been receiving these emails or need to change your email address for this correspondence, please email Ms. Roby.  SchoolCast is also used for district messaging and important notifications to our families when needed so it is important to ensure that each family is set up correctly in SchoolCast.

Student Schedules

Students schedules are now available online through INow.  If you need assistance with your login information, please contact Sharon McGehee. Our counselor is currently on leave.  If you have questions or concerns about your schedule, please contact Ms. Roby. A printed schedule can also be picked up with the student laptop.

Schedules will continue to be adjusted throughout this week as I try to balance classes and resolve conflicts.  All students should follow their schedule as posted online until I am able to make the adjustments needed on the official schedule.  Thank you for your patience.

Student Laptops

All students will be receiving a new laptop this year.  Laptop distribution is underway and Friday, August 14th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. is the makeup time for students who have not yet picked up their device.  All students must pay a $35 computer usage fee.  You can prepay through My School Fees on the school website and print your receipt to show at laptop pickup or pay with cash or check (made out to NCTHS) when you come to pick up your laptop.

Students must login to the computer on the school network to activate the device. Technology support is available in the parking lot during scheduled pickup times if you have trouble logging in. If you have problems with your laptop after pickup, please contact the school system technician Amy Clark for troubleshooting assistance.

Accessing Course Materials (Schoology)

Beginning August 17th, all students will access their learning materials and class information through Schoology.  To access Schoology, please complete the following steps:

  1. Login to your HCS issued laptop using your username and password.
  2. Click on the “Clever” icon on your home screen. Students use Clever to access different platforms such as Schoology & INow.
  3. Find and select the “Schoology” tile within Clever.
  4. You will then see your scheduled classes in Schoology.
  5. Click on the scheduled class to view the course syllabus, see class assignments, and find links to participate in live lessons.

If the Clever App is not working you can go directly to the Clever website or Schoology website and login using your student email address (firstName.lastName@stu.hsv-k12.org) with your school password (usually your 6 digit birthday).

Teachers may use a variety of course material including Pearson, SchoolsPLP, ACCESS Franchise courses, and other resources to provide clear instruction and support to all students.  Course materials will be uploaded to Schoology or a link provided for easy access.

Daily Instructional Schedule

Schoology will be used to provide all course content.  Students are encouraged to participate in live lessons, but will also be able to retrieve recorded lessons. The district has requested that we limit the amount of time students are required to sit in front of a computer so all live lessons will be limited to 45 minutes. During the remote learning period, teachers will provide live lessons in the morning for all four class periods and then students will have the afternoon to complete assignments individually, in virtual small groups, or with online teacher support.  We will continue to follow the alternating block schedule with school days regularly alternating between A day and B day.  For the first week of school, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be A days.  Tuesday and Thursday will be B days.  Days continue to alternate throughout the year with the following Monday being a B day and so forth. An A/B calendar for the year will be sent to families through SchoolCast.

Assignments, Grades, and Due Dates

Teachers will enter at least two grades per week unless students are working on a project where only one grade is appropriate for the week. Although Schoology may display student grades on some assignments, course averages are maintained in InformationNOW (INow).  Please be sure to check student grades in INow for an accurate record. Grades on all assignments will not necessarily be available in Schoology.

All student work is due on the due date established by the teacher.  Late assignments will be graded based on the teacher’s policy as indicated in the course syllabus.  Assignments are NOT optional and students are expected to stay current in their coursework. Please work with the teacher if extenuating circumstances exist.

Parent Access to School Information

Parents will have access to school information through a variety of sources.

SchoolCast is the primary method of communication between school administration, the district, and parents.  If you are not receiving weekly emails from the school and periodic messages from the district, please contact Ms. Roby or Ms. McGehee to update your information.

Schoology will be the primary way for teachers to communicate with students.  Parents will also be able to set up an account to view their student’s lessons and assignments. We will be sending login information to parents soon.

INow is the program used to store students grades and attendance.  Use INow to stay current on your student’s grades in each class.  If you need help setting up access to INow, please contact Ms. McGehee.

Addressing Concerns

Please address your concerns first with the person involved.  If you have questions or concerns about a class, please contact the teacher.  Please give them the opportunity to resolve any issues before contacting a school administrator.  If your concern is not resolved with the teacher, feel free to reach out to me or Mr. Sims for assistance.

Special Education / 504 Plans

Throughout the school year whether students are being taught remotely, virtually or in-person, teachers will follow all IEPs and 504 plans. Please contact Mr. Agnew or a school administrator for support.

JROTC

Once remote learning ends and students are allowed to return to campus, all students who are taking JROTC this year must report to campus two days per week for PT and uniform inspection even if they are virtual students.  Follow JROTC on facebook.

Meal Service

Grab and Go meals will be served daily from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. as a drive through service at the back of the school near the cafeteria. All three meals may be picked up at the same time. Please remain in your car. The student’s lunch number will be required to pick up meals.
