In-Person Graduation Exercises

Date:
Thursday, June 25, 2020 (All day) to Friday, June 26, 2020 (All day)

HCS will host graduation exercises June 25-26, 2020, for the district’s six high schools at the VBC if health conditions permit. Graduation times are as follows:

June 25, 2020
  • 10 a.m.: New Century Technology High School
  • 2 p.m.: Lee High School
  • 6 p.m.: Grissom High School
June 26, 2020
  • 10 a.m.: Jemison High School
  • 2 p.m.: Columbia High School
  • 6 p.m.: Huntsville High School

District leaders announced the dates during a special called board meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2020, held virtually.

The district will follow guidelines and protocols for events established by the VBC, which will include adhering to social distancing guidelines among both students and guests in attendance. Students will be provided with four tickets for friends, family members and guests.

Graduations will be shortened in order to provide crews with time to clean the venue between ceremonies. Commencements will include a welcome message from school administrators and distributing diplomas to graduates.

Schools will provide students with masks to wear during the graduation ceremonies. Additionally, HCS is asking all guests in attendance to bring and wear masks to the events.

Graduation attendance is optional for students and families, and any students who choose not to participate will be mailed their diploma. Graduation exercises will be broadcast on the district’s website at www.huntsvillecityschools.org and ETV to provide stakeholders the option to view the events remotely.

HCS leaders are noting the plan is subject to change as they receive new information and as health conditions evolve. HCS also reserved the VBC for July 13-14, 2020, as alternate dates if health conditions do not allow events to be held during the month of June.

Administrators are already considering additional locations as alternate venues in the event health guidelines to not allow events to be held at the VBC.

Principals will be sharing additional information and logistics with their school communities.
