Welcome Back Letter

Greetings Ridgecrest Families,

We are excited about beginning the 2020-2021 school year here at Ridgecrest Elementary. Also, we are hopeful that your family is staying happy and safe. As you are aware, the beginning of the school year will look very different in Huntsville City Schools, as we are starting the 1st nine weeks with remote learning. This letter will provide you with pertinent information to include accessing the platform (Schoology) that the district will use this year. Please feel free to contact the school with any questions or concerns that you may have. It is our goal to make this transition as efficient as possible for all involved. We are #SonnieHerefordStrong!

Devices:

Huntsville City Schools is providing all K-12 students with a device to access Schoology and other academic platforms. Please make sure that you arrange to receive your device from the school. At this time, the device is a Lenovo Chromebook. Kindergarten will receive an iPad until Chromebooks arrive for that grade level. Please be advised that there is a device fee of $35.00 for students in grades K-2. Please arrange with the school to make this payment either in person (exact change) or electronically.

Device pick-up schedule:

August 14, 2020:

  • 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
  • 1:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.

Instruction:

Instruction will take place daily for students. Your child’s classroom teacher will send a schedule so that you are aware of the times that live instruction will take place, as well as when students will take part in specials (art, music, band, choir, ETA, counseling, library, etc.). Students will receive daily instruction in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education. It is imperative that students login each day to receive the live instruction, as much as possible. Teachers will also record/post their lessons for students to access at a later time. Assignments are due within 48 hours after they are assigned. If your child will have issues accessing the internet, please let the teacher know as soon as possible so that alternate arrangements can be made.

Schoology Platform:

HCS will be utilizing a new online platform called Schoology. Your student’s teacher will send instructions for use. It is very interactive, and parents will be able to have a first-hand look at student’s daily assignments.

Teachers will communicate the following with you:

  • Classroom Introductory/Procedure
  • How to access and use Schoology
  • Open House/Meet the Teacher Video
  • Student’s Daily Schedule
  • Testing Schedule
  • Virtual office hours and academic support times letter

Child Nutrition (Breakfast/Lunch):

Although students will not be on campus while we are receiving virtual instruction, we understand the importance of having a nutritious meal. Huntsville City Schools Child Nutrition Program will be providing break, lunch and supper during the time students are receiving virtual instruction. Parent may pick up meal’s curbside from 10:30-12:30 daily, Monday through Friday.

PowerSchool Registration (formerly Infosnap):

Please make sure that you have completed your 2020-2021 PowerSchool registration. It is extremely important our students’ information is up-to-date. If you have not done so, please go to the HCS District Strategy & Innovation Page. If the student is brand new to HCS, please complete new student registration, otherwise, please register your child as a returning student.

*Students will begin receiving grades the third week of instruction (Week of August 31 – September 4, 2020)
