Six HCS Students Selected as Presidential Scholar Candidates
Six high school seniors have been selected as candidates for the 2017 Presidential Scholars. Michael J. McMeen, Sydney Ross, Jenny A. Shen, Afura N. Taylor, Shengquig Wang, and Aaron X. Zhai are all students from Grissom High School, and will be presented a resolution at tonight’s school board meeting to honor their accomplishment. Only 61 students from Alabama were selected as candidates for recognition in the Presidential Scholars Program.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects students based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, along with community service, leadership, and commitment to high ideals. The program was first established in 1964, and application is by invitation only. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholar Finalists, with up to three selected from Alabama. The finalists will be announced in early May at the National Recognition Program being held mid-June in Washington, D.C.
James Brahm, a graduate of Grissom High School, was selected in 2015 as the Presidential Scholars Finalist for Alabama.
