Teacher Spotlight: Jan Coryell-Mahone
Congratulations to Ms. Jan Coryell-Mahone of Morris Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight!
Ms. Jan Coryell-Mahone is a 24-year veteran teacher. She has taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Morris for a total of 22 years. She started teaching when she had her own children and realized that she could be the teacher she wanted her daughters to have. Ms. Coryell-Mahone has been married to her husband, Morgan, for 33 years, and their two daughters have given them eight beautiful grandchildren. Her passion is teaching, inspiring, and challenging children to love learning. She says that she considers herself a lifelong learner, but her education began in California and continued as her family moved to Texas, New Jersey, Alabama and finally to Milan, Italy, where she graduated from the American School of Milan.
"Ms. Coryell-Mahon is a fantastic, outstanding teacher because she always keeps things interesting. She's always 'upgrading' to new teaching strategies and is always excited about learning," says Morris Elementary Principal Patricia Boyd. Ms. Boyd adds that Ms. Coryell-Mahone sets the bar high for her students, and calls her a "warm demander" because she is caring and sensitive to her students needs, but also expects them to succeed and work hard. Her students confirm this view of Ms. Coryell-Mahone, with Aniaja Cosby stating that "she is always there for us when we need help." If the 22 years spent at Morris weren't evidence enough of her committment to area students, Ms. Coryell-Mahone adds that she has "been here at Morris for almost my entire career - it's just a wonderful place and it's really fulfilling to help the kids and see them grow and learn."
