Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Philip Givens

Congratulations to Mr. Philip Givens of Monte Sano Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight!

Mr. Givens and his wife enjoy going to their three children's soccer games, and playing outside whenever they get a chance. In addition to cheering on their kids on in their games, Mr. Givens coaches his daughter's soccer team. The Givens family is a big Alabama football supporter, but they also enjoy going to the movies and watching their favorite TV shows during down time. Mr. Givens says that he loves teaching such wonderful students math, social studies, and English, and he has been doing so in Huntsville City Schools for over twenty years.

"Mr. Givens is just top-notch.  We are blessed to have him here at Monte Sano," says Principal Sharon Driggers.  She goes on to compliment how well he relates to both the students and the parents while serving as a strong role model.  Students all say he is great because he can explain difficult concepts in many different ways, and he works with them until they understand the material.  Kemarion Miller, one of his students, also says that "when you go into the classroom, you can feel the energy."  According to another student, Nadia Smith, "there is always a positive attitude in his room."  It's obvious that a lot of love goes into his job, and Mr. Givens says "I love being a teacher because, number one, I get to help people."

Judging by the engagement and student progress evident in his classroom, one can be certain that Mr. Givens is doing just that.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
