Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Amy Turner
Congratulations to Ms. Amy Turner of Lakewood Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!
Ms. Turner, a first-grade teacher at Lakewood Elementary, has always loved working with children. She feels passionately that teachers have a great influence on our communities because of the impact they have on students. She says that she decided to become an educator during her senior year in high school because she realized that teaching is the one career that influences all others.
“Ms. Turner is an exceptional teacher,” remarks Lakewood Principal Fredrick Barnes, “she’s a loving, caring person that takes care of the students in the best way that you could want.” He goes on to say that she is always down in the floor working with the students and doing everything she needs to do so she can be sure her students succeed. According to Haven Moore, one of Ms. Turner’s students, “we read books together, [and] every time we read books together we get to know the words.”
Ms. Turner says that first grade is a foundational time for her students, and reading is the key to all learning in school, but she also wants to make sure that she builds a community for the students so that they can learn to relate to one another. One of the first elements of that is showing the students how much she cares about them. In Ms. Turner’s words, “they need to know how much you care before they can care how much you know.”
When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Turner loves spending time with her husband and three children. They enjoy engaging in a lot of outdoor activities, such as bike-riding, camping, and hiking. She also enjoys playing music with her family, adding that it always brings them together in harmony while also connecting them to family past.
The sense of community, caring, and love for learning found in Ms. Turner’s classroom is a testament to her success as an educator.
