Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Beth Locy

Congratulations to Ms. Beth Locy of Lakewood Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!

Ms. Locy always loved books growing up, and her favorite place to be at school was the library.  She says that books can be a window to the outside world, but they can also be a mirror for people to examine themselves.  When she isn’t working with students, she enjoys running as a part of the Hogwarts Running Club, a Harry Potter-themed virtual running club which raises money for various charities.  She also takes ceramics classes at the Huntsville Museum of Art, and enjoys travelling with her husband and two children.

“The students love her.  The teachers love her,” says Lakewood Principal Fred Barnes, “she’s just a great person.”  Ms. Locy says she gets a lot of inspiration from her own middle school librarian, Ms. Smith, who she says made her feel incredibly inspired and encouraged.  Ms. Locy wants to pass that on, and she loves sharing her passion for reading with students. “There is a book out there for everyone,” she says, adding that when anyone claims reading isn’t for them, it’s just because “they haven’t found the right book yet.”  It’s all about getting to know the students well enough to lead them towards something that might interest them.

Ms. Locy states that reading is a large and necessary component of any student’s education.  She adds, “my wish is for them to enjoy reading, for them to develop a love for reading,” because it will not only help students succeed in school, but can also help them to have richer lives as well.  Ms. Locy is obviously having an enriching affect on a great number of student lives.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight.”  Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
