Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Blanche Spence
Congratulations to Ms. Blanche Spence of Dawson Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight recipient!
Ms. Spence knew that she wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. She has four siblings, and all but one of them are also teachers. She says her father was an avid reader, and he would share everything he learned about in his books with the family. Ms. Spence explains that this constant state of learning at home made it almost automatic that she and her siblings would pursue education in some way. When she isn’t teaching, she enjoys spending time outside in her garden. She says that working in the soil, feeling the warmth of the sun, and hearing the music of birds gives her an almost therapeutic feeling. She and her husband have two sons, and she enjoys cooking and entertaining in their home.
“She is an outstanding teacher,” says Principal Deana Henson, “she is just a quiet force at Dawson Elementary.” She also adds that Ms. Spence has a great rapport with both students and parents, which is part of what leads to her success in the classroom. Ms. Spence says, “I love being a teacher because I enjoy trying to establish in students the desire for education.” She does this by making her classroom interactive and engaging. Students in her classroom also love to read, and they pick up books without being asked and always want to read to each other or have a story read to them. Ms. Spence says she hopes that her students will continue that passion for reading well beyond the first grade.
According to first grade student Malayshia Malone, “She is a very nice teacher and she always teaches good things.” It’s certainly clear that Ms. Spence is doing great things in her classroom every single day.
