Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Christy Lang

Congratulations to Ms. Christy Lang of Challenger Elementary, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight!

Ms. Christy Lang is a graduate of both Athen's State and Alabama A&M Universities, and has been teaching at Challenger Elementary for thirteen years.  In her tenure at the school, she has taught 3rd, 5th, and currently 1st grade.  She lives with her husband, John, and their golden retriever Cooper.  When she isn't teaching, she enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling (both domestic and international), reading, baking, and just generally being active - which sometimes includes going paddle-boarding with Cooper.  Ms. Lang also plays on an adult soccer league, and says she has been playing soccer since she was about eight years old.

"She's got some of the greatest growth in the building," says Challenger Elementary Principal Dr. Michelle Wallace, "you can see kids learning, and see the light behind their eyes come on every day, so we're very blessed to have her here."  The principal goes on to say that Ms. Lang builds great connections with her students, and the students perform better as a result.  Logan Self, one of Ms. Lang's 1st grade students, says that "she's a nice teacher because she always helps us."  Ms. Lang's classroom is a structured place, where there are consistent rules and habits for almost every activity.  This is all part of her effort to make students feel safe and welcome.  According to Ms. Lang, "I want them to want to come to school, and so that requires me to make them feel valued."  Visiting her classroom, one can expect to find students actively engaged and learning, and the results speak for themselves each year.

Ms. Lang exemplifies two of the most important qualities found in the exceptional teacher, stating it in her own words: "I try my best, and I love the kids."

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
