Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Kristen Jackson

Congratulations to Kristen Jackson of Jones Valley Elementary School, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight!

Ms. Jackson is originally from Biloxi, Missisippi, far down on the gulf coast, but she has lived in Huntsville with her husband and two children since 2008.  When she isn't teaching, she loves spending time with her family outdoors, and especially enjoys boating.  Her husband, Justin, works locally for NASA as a materials engineer, and they are both big fans of football - especially the Saints & Mississippi State.  Ms. Jackson also says that her favorite book is Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon, by Patty Lovell.  Jones Valley Elementary is the only school she has taught at in Huntsville City Schools, and she says she loves it because she feels at home.

In the classroom, Ms. Jackson is a hands-on teacher.  She says her job "is to make the students love learning and coming to school."  They sing and they dance in her class, anything that will help to keep the first grade students engaged.  Taunya Smith, principal at Jones Valley Elementary, says that "her whole body and soul seems to be in what she's doing."  Entering her classroom, one might find students perched on the carpet studying problems together as a group, or 'fist-bumping' Ms. Jackson in triumph as they succeed at an academic task.  Owen Allen, one of her students, says "she's very fun."  Another of her students, Greer Baker, says "she's a really good teacher."

Ms. Jackson says, "teaching first grade is absolutely fabulous," but it's pretty obvious that being a student in her classroom is equally fabulous.

Each week, ETV will showcase an outstanding Huntsville City Schools educator as a feature in the “Teacher Spotlight." Highlighted recipients receive gifts from SchoolCraft.
