Teacher Spotlight: Sayward Lowery
Congratulations to Ms. Sayward Lowery of Mountain Gap P-8, selected as this week’s Teacher Spotlight!
Ms. Sayward Lowery is a 2005 graduate of Athens State University. She has been married for fifteen years and has two daughters. She has been teaching for a total of nine years, the last eight of which at Mountain Gap P-8. Ms. Lowery decided to become an educator largely due to a former teacher, Mrs. Duckett, who she says was amazing and taught her what it was like to have someone care for her in the classroom. When Ms. Lowery isn't teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family, spending time outdoors, and attending Rock Family Worship Center.
Ms. Lowery loves building relationships with her students. She enjoys getting to see them accomplish their goals and seeing them get excited about what they can do in May compared to August. "Ms. Lowery is truly magical," says Mt. Gap P-8 Principal Heather Bardwell, "she loves her students - she treats them as her own." Ms. Lowery says that her "favorite thing about being a teacher is getting her children to realize how awesome they are." Her students seem to respond really well to her concerned demeanor towards them. According to Tristian McGuff, one of Ms. Lowery's students, "she's really fun, and she's pretty cool." The connections that that Ms. Lowery forges with her students last longer than just the school year she teaches them in. According to Ms. Bardwell, students from 3rd grade to middle school want to come back and help out in Ms. Lowery's class. Ms. Lowery is truly an example of how a teacher can have a positive impact on a child's life, throughout their life. Perhaps another of Ms. Lowery's students, Owen Componation, sums it up best - "she's a really good teacher."
