Three HCS High Schools Featured as Top Schools in State by U.S. News & World Report

Each year, U.S. News & World Report compiles a list of the best high schools in the country and in each state.  This year marks the first year that the listing included almost every high school in the nation, with data from over 23,000 public high schools used in its creation.  Three Huntsville City Schools were featured on the list of the top twenty-five high schools for the state of Alabama: New Century Technology High School, Huntsville High School, and Grissom High School.  The inclusion of these three schools also earned Huntsville City Schools the distinction of having the most included high schools for any district in the state.

U.S. News describes the highest-ranked schools as “those whose attendees demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math and reading state assessments, passed a diverse array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.”

Principals from the three Huntsville City Schools all said they were thrilled to be included in the list, and attribute their success to the hard work of students, parents, and school staff.

U.S. News revamped their rankings methodology for 2019 and reviewed each school’s performance according to six weighted indicators: College Readiness, College Curriculum Breadth, Math & Reading Proficiency, Math & Reading Performance, Underserved Student Performance, and Graduation Rate.  College Readiness was the most heavily weighted criteria and focused primarily on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate participation and success rates.  U.S. News collected data from the U.S. Dept. of Education, statewide math and reading assessments, and The College Board to generate a score between 0 and 100.

Grissom High School placed at 24th in the state of Alabama and was given an overall score of 88.47.  Huntsville High School ranked at 15th in the state and was given the overall score of 93.23.  New Century Technology High School was featured as the 3rd best school in the state of Alabama and also ranked at an impressive 294th nationally.  U.S. News gave them an overall score of 98.3 and noted the schools 99% participation rate in Advanced Placement coursework and exams.

Since the methodology changed so significantly this year, U.S. News cautions that a school’s 2019 ranking should not be compared with any previous rankings.
