Sue Zupko

I am a lifelong learner and hope to instill that love of learning in my students through relevant life activities. One major portion of my philosophy of education is that there be “No Child Left Inside,” and I have taken my students to such places as Tremont, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, the Tennessee Aquarium, Desoto Falls, Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, and more. My love of the outdoors is highlighted by two of my hobbies: photography and bird watching. My husband and I married at Andrews Air Force Base in 1978 while I was serving in the US Army. We have two sons and six grandchildren with whom we love to interact. I collect giraffes and cotton fabric and also try to quilt as often as time allows. My students and I have raised six service dogs for Canine Companions for Independence since 2003. One of my dogs, Newton, worked in the Orange County School District in Florida as a Facility Dog for 5 ½ years. When he retired, he came home to us, and we now work as a Therapy Partner team at Weatherly Heights Elementary and Fox Army Health Center. I love to read and two of my favorite book series are The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. My brother, who lives in Huntsville, supports my environmental passion and gathers bottle caps and aluminum cans for me to recycle at school. In high school, I considered heading to Broadway to pursue a career in the theatre since I love to sing and dance. I have sung in many choirs, but currently only sing in our church choirs.
