The Jazz Age Performance

Arts Huntsville met with our two 6th grade social studies teachers, Mrs. McCluskey and Mr. Kimbrough, in October. Together they formed a plan to integrate the arts into the social studies curriculum. As an IB school, we are required to complete an IB assessment at the end of each unit. Mrs. McCluskey and Mr. Kimbrough arranged for the performance and daily reflections to count for the assessment grade. The students had just begun learning about The Jazz Age. What could be more fun to learn about The Jazz Age than to learn dance steps used in that time period?

Arts Huntsville provided us with four performers to work in our classrooms. Ethan, Claire, and Robyn Mitchell along with Eugene Fleming came into our classrooms and helped us portay The Jazz Age in a more authenic way. The students learned about how a stage works, lines, and dance steps to famous jazzy songs. At the end of each practice, the students would reflect on what they learned and how it related to The Jazz Age. This was such a wonderful opportuinty for our students, we cannot thank Arts Huntsville enough for all they provided our students with last semester. On December 14, 2018, we held a performance for the other 6th graders and parents to showcase what we learned.
