National Junior Honor Society
Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. Seventh and eighth grade students are eligible for induction. Selection is based upon careful consideration of one’s scholarship, service, character, citizenship, and leadership. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Junior Honor Society strives to recognize the total student; one who excels in academics, leadership, service and character.
How to Join / Membership Requirements
During second semester, 7th grade and 8th grade students who meet the national requirement of having a cumulative average of 85 or higher are invited to apply for membership in the National Junior Honor Society. Once invited, students are evaluated by their personal statement, scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. A five-member faculty panel evaluates students for induction into National Junior Honor Society. Using the HCS National Junior Honor Society Rubric, student candidates will be scored based on their personal statement covering leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Those selected for membership will be notified and inducted in May.
-Leadership must be shown in classrooms or in the community
-Up to ten hours of service must be completed (with adult sponsorship/verification)
-Character is scored from the number of suspensions, office referrals, detentions, and/or silent lunches
-Citizenship is scored from student’s involvement in school or community teams, clubs and/or organizations.
