In celebration of Black History Month, Providence Elementary School held a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) door decoration contest. Students throughout the school researched and created door displays before decorating hallways to honor HBCU’s. In addition to making the displays, the students gave presentations reciting facts about their selected school as a panel of guest judges viewed the entries. The guest judges included Huntsville City Schools District 5 Board Member Carlos Matthews, Alabama A&M University President Dr. Andrew Hugine Jr., and former state school board member Dr. Mary Jane Caylor.
Providence teacher Nicole Schroeder shared that as a district who believes in getting our children college ready, it is important to highlight HBCU’s. Nineteen teachers at Providence graduated from Alabama A&M, and Ms. Schroeder says that “it’s important to show our students that even though it’s a Historically Black College, anyone can go there, and that’s important to showcase during this month.”
The winners of the door decoration contest will be announced at an assembly later this week.
