Students at Columbia were treated to a rare look behind the literary curtain yesterday with celebrated author and publisher, Dr. Julia A. Royston. Dr. Royston is a retired educator and library media specialist from Louisville, KY.
She spent the day moving between the school’s English and Art departments which involved small, tailored and intimate sessions.
Royston, known for her series Terrance the Terrific, shared not just her books and stories, but the non-linear process of bringing them to life. She spoke to the students about the creative process, her journey, her inspiration and steps not only to writing books, but how to publish them too. Dr. Royston outlined the multi-stage process that balances creative exploration with legal protections like copyright and the principles of intellectual freedom.
She emphasized that pictures are not just illustrations, but are vital storytelling tools that work alongside the text to create a complete experience.
The students learned about the importance of readers, editors, and artists and the transition from writing to editing to marketing to publishing. They also gained knowledge about the entrepreneurship side-- how to monetize their work as writers and illustrators.
The visit concluded with an honest, thoughtful Q&A session where students asked questions.
The visit was a divine opportunity for Dr. Royston to share her unique experience, to inspire young writers, and pay forward the results of hard work and perseverance.
Thank you, Dr. Royston for visiting our library!
