In Mrs. Allison Davide’s chemistry class, students have been actively engaged in a recent learning module designed to make some of the most important ideas in chemistry both meaningful and approachable. The focus was on balancing chemical equations, and students used physical and visual models to help them truly understand why equations must be balanced, not just how to do it.
By building and manipulating representations of atoms and reactions, students were able to see firsthand how matter is conserved during chemical changes. This hands-on approach helped bring abstract ideas to life, making it easier for students to connect what they see on paper with what is happening at the particle level.
Alongside this work, students also took time to revisit key foundational concepts such as atomic structure, including protons, neutrons, and electrons. These reteaching and review activities gave students a chance to strengthen their understanding and build confidence with essential ideas that support all future chemistry learning.
Overall, the combination of modeling, discussion, and thoughtful review created a supportive learning environment where students could deepen their understanding of chemistry in a meaningful and engaging way."
