Fifth grade GATE students took the lead in organizing their very first fundraising event, Run for Water, held on March 10. Inspired by their reading of A Long Walk to Water, students were motivated to take meaningful action and support communities in South Sudan. They partnered with Water for South Sudan, an organization dedicated to building wells and improving access to clean water.
From start to finish, these dedicated students demonstrated exceptional leadership and collaboration. They worked closely with community members, coordinated on-site emergency services, and developed all event materials—including flyers, registration forms, logos, and race shirts. In addition, they created a detailed supply list, managed a budget, wrote a grant, and successfully facilitated both the race and reflection activities.
The evening was a tremendous success, raising over $1,400 to support well construction in Sudan. We are incredibly proud of our students’ initiative, teamwork, and commitment to making a difference. Great job, Hawks!
